A Lake for Everyone: Maschsee Lake

Maschsee Lake is a splendid manmade lake that has become a must see and explored place in Hannover. It's safe, clear waters attract many water sports enthusiasts. The 6 kilometre trail that lies along the banks of the lake are admired by joggers, cyclists and those who simply wish to enjoy a leisurely stroll in order to get away from it all.

The lake was constructed during the period of 1934 and 1936. It was built in the flood meadows and borders the River Leine. This renowned recreation area covers an area of 78000 square meters. However, Maschsee is considered safe because it is merely 2 metres deep. This artificial lake was created with the main intention of providing a leisure spot to those arriving in Hannover.

Maschsee Lake is full of activity and offers something for everyone. It is ideal for rowing, sailing, and windsurfing or to even enjoy a ride in a pedalo. During winter time when the water is frozen it is ideal for ice skating. The not too deep waters of the lake make it also a perfect spot for swimming for the entire family. The swimming baths are placed on the south bank. There is a 300 meter-long beach in the bathing area and an entry fee is not charged.

The lake is made not only for the water sports lover. It also caters to the laid back person seeking a peaceful ride around the lake on a boat. During summer boats are operated by üstra which is the public transport company of Hannover.

This charming and lively Hannover Lake is also the venue for numerous regattas and popular boat races. For instance, the Dragon Boat races are held at Maschsee each year. Furthermore, the Maschseefest which is a festival held during summer is a superb fiesta for the entire family.

Maschsee Lake is located close to many tempting restaurants. There is also a casino located close by and travellers can easily get to the lake by metro.
