The 7th king of the Chakri dynasty, King Rama VII was known to be a capable leader and an ardent fan of the cinema and of the aesthetics. Thus, he constructed this royal theatre with his own money for him to indulge in the theatrics and promote Thai culture.

At the time of its construction, it was one of the most innovative entertainment frontiers and was among the largest theatres in Asia. Located at the heart of the buzzing capital of Bangkok, the Chalermkrung Royal Theatre is open daily and stages different performances which are centered round Thai history and customs. Its specialty is the 'Khon' performances; a traditional masked dance of the Southeast Asian country which portrays Thai history, myths and legends. These dances are generally held during the winter season.

Subsequently the theatre was renovated and is now equipped with state of the art technology to facilitate modern cinemas and add all the necessary special effects to make the vibrant performances even more enticing. Laser and multivision systems have greatly enhanced the films shown at the venue. The music, dances, plays and movies are refreshingly Thai in every way and live up to the expectations of the founder of the theatre. Unique acts are introduced regularly to commemorate the great king and his services to both the country and the performing arts.

Anyone with a passion for the performing arts would find their monies worth here as it blends the novelties with the myths. Since it is located amidst the busy business district, it is quite convenient to hop in for a relaxing two hours of drama, song and dance.

The flamboyance and colour of Thai culture are clearly brought to the fore at the Royal Theatre, while Thai hospitality and opulence are synonymous with the President Solitaire Bangkok. As a front runner in the industry, the Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel is a customary favourite among local and foreign visitors.
