Spread out over an imposing 45,000 square meters on a scenic island off the southern coast of Doha lies the county’s foremost authority on the history and evolution of Islamic art. Simply known as Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art this monumental institution lays claim to one of the most complete and comprehensive collections of Islamic artifacts found anywhere in the globe. Having opened its doors to the public in 2008 the museum located on an island encircled by a parkland off the Corniche is spread out over 64 acres with an impressive 45,000 m2 of culminated exhibition space.
Housed within an iconic structure designed by celebrated architect I. M. Pei who designed the famed Louvre pyramid the museum displays works of art, ceramics, textiles and manuscripts that were collected over a two decade period. Boasting an impressive repertoire of exhibits that include items from Central Asia, Egypt, India, Iran, Turkey, Iraq and even Spain it is believed that the museum was the premier institution of its nature in all of the Persian Gulf due to its extensive collection and equally well stocked library and study.

Showcasing a large number of items possessed and acquired from the Qatar Royal Family, the Qatar National Collection of Islamic Art which includes wood/metal work, glass items, ceramics and jewelry are also found within the venue. Thirteenth century gold threaded imperial tent linings from Central Asia and Iran are other highlights at the locale in addition to 600 year-old Arabic inscriptions on silk and ivory. Calligraphic inscriptions from 15th century Spain are other artifacts of interest while the centuries old Quran that is believed to have been composed a few years following the prophet’s death is also of great significance. Various samples of ancient Christian calligraphy are also displayed at the museum along with the intriguing Book of Secrets which dates back t the 11th century and documents 30 mechanical discoveries.
