Approximately 185 kilometres from Baotou City, stands the beautiful Genghis Khan's Mausoleum which was built in 1954. It is recognised as the gathering place to pay tribute and bid sacrifice to the spirit of the great Mongolian hero Genghis Khan.

Genghis Khan also known as the 'Khan of Khans', was named so by Mongolian tribes referring to him as the 'Powerful King'. During the latter part of the 12th century it was this great leader that unified Mongolian tribes. He was also the brave chief that challenged other empires to spread out his enormous Mongolian empire.

The great emperor Genghis Khan died of age and was buried secretly due to the long lived Mongolian tradition. Following his burial about 2,000 men were killed by nearly 800 soldiers. Therefore the exact location of the actual tomb still remains a mystery.

However, the sacred Genghis Khan Mausoleum is not where this great Mongolian Hero's remains are placed. It is merely a place where his clothes are kept in memory but is regarded by Mongolian people as a site with immense religious and historical significance.

Constructed magnificently in the shape of Mongolian yurts, Genghis Khan Mausoleum consists of three grand halls. There are superbly built extensive corridors that join the three halls. These corridors display frescos of the life of Genghis Khan. The memorial hall which is considered the main hall is located right at the heart of the Mausoleum. The memorial hall is where the 13 feet marble statue of Genghis Khan is placed. Right behind this huge statue, there is a map of the enormous territory of the Yuan Dynasty.

On either sides of the Memorial hall are the west hall and the east hall. The arms and ammunition of Genghis Khan are displayed at the west hall while the east hall houses the coffins of one of his wives and fourth son.

This outstanding Mongolian wonder can be further admired by staying at a nearby Baotou luxury hotel. Guests can choose to stay at a luxury accommodation Baotou such as Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou. It is an ideal accommodation choice for both business and leisure travellers and is also the first international luxury hotel in Baotou city.
