The Cu Chi Tunnels were one of the main sources of shelter for the people who fought for their independence against the French in the Vietnam War. The tunnels that were dug out by hand from days on end forming an extensive and strategic underground network, which spans across 250 kilometres from what used to the outskirts of Cambodia and what is now Saigon.

Currently an intriguing tourist attraction, many line up to see and understand the detail of the tunnels that sheltered the Vietnamese soldiers from the tyranny of the French and American forces. What started out as a shelter formed into a series of sleeping chambers, storerooms and underground hospitals, which left the soldiers of the opposing side intrigued to where the alive and wounded disappeared to in the stealth of the night.

The soldiers known as 'Tunnel Rats' were able to barely crawl through the tunnels let alone walk through the narrow passageways from the surface to shelter below. An intricate maze of deception, an individual who was not familiar with the surrounding were encountered with the false tunnels which plummeted them into sharpened bamboo stakes and if not so, were trapped by a hoard of poisonous scorpions, crawling spiders and stinging fire ants.


However, nowadays the tunnels are indeed safe to pass through. Preserved purely for heritage and tourist purposes, the tunnels are indeed truly fascinating. The earth that surrounds the area is much preserved even after four decades.

A war remnant that has puzzled many soldiers, many tourists visit this place to be reminded of their heritage and ancestry.
