Senado Square located in Macau, China is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is part of the Historic Centre of Macau. Part of the Portuguese colony of Macau, the site was called Largo do Senado by the Portuguese. Macau is now a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China and the Senado Square is also known as the Senate Square. Nonetheless, according to the official records of Macau, the Senate Square is called by the name Avenida de Almedia Ribeiro. The Avenida de Almedia Ribeiro was constructed to displaying the sheer might and the advance design abilities of the Portuguese colonist at the time. The Largo do Senado though constructed by the Portuguese comprises a blend of both Portuguese and Chinese architectural elements.
The Senado Square covers an area of 3200 square kilometers and consists of beautifully ornamented pavements. The Avenida de Almedia Ribeiro is surrounded by St. Dominic's Church, the Leal Senado (Portuguese for Loyal Senate) and the General Post Office. The Leal Senado was built in the year 1784. The pavement at the Senado Square comprises of a mosaic made of coloured stones, which form a pattern of waves upon the pavement beneath the feet of the pedestrians. Along the pavements of the Senado Square, one can go towards the ruins of St. Paul's. The Senado Square was built in the year 1918, and was constructed in order to link the inner harbor with the Praia Grande.
