Since the renaissance the London theatre scene has been one of the most brilliant stages of creative activity in the world. Based on the rich traditions of immortal playwrights such as Shakespeare and Ben Johnson, the London Broadway is an exulting fusion of music, dance and drama continuing to attract considerable audiences composed of both locals and tourists despite the stiff competition posed by the more economical cinema. The unfailing attraction of Broadway undoubtedly lies in its live display of energetic artistic expression, manifesting the summit of human creativity.

In the early productions songs and dance items were incorporated in order to manifest excessive emotion or to add spectacle. However, during the latter half of the 20th century the tendency was to use songs and dances that helped to advance the plot. Another modern trait was the use of musicals to portray significant political messages as is done in "The king and I" and "Rags" which denounce racism, adding "a cause" to entertainment. Certain performances such as "Annie get your Gun" and "Rent" are original creations while many are adaptations from books such as "Les Misérables", "My Fair Lady" and "Romeo and Juliet". In addition, several Walt Disney films have also been staged on the Broadway of which the most notable are; "Lion King", "Mary Poppins" and "The Little Mermaid". Generally, modern Broadway productions are staged eight times a week and their duration is determined by popularity. Some of the most famous musicals of all times were "My Fair Lady", "The Sound of Music", "The Phantom of the Opera", "Annie Get Your Gun" and more recently "Mama Mia" and "Urinetown". New productions as well as reruns and remakes of old classics can be viewed at many of London's theatres such as "Theatre Royal" at Drury Lane, "Savoy", "Garrick" and "Leicester Square". In addition certain dramatic companies also offer backstage and theatre tours, providing visitors with a comprehensive Broadway experience.
