The first thing that any mention of Makkah brings to mind is the most holy shrine of Kaaba, the holiest place in Islam. But as the area was the seat of the Holy Prophet’s power, Makkah and its surrounding is home to many interesting places that are somehow tied to the story of early Islam and the journeys and deeds of Prophet Muhammad. Once such place is the revered Thour Mountain lying to the south of Makkah, which was the refuge of the Holy Prophet during his times of direst need.

Thour mountain of Makkah is a rocky and mostly barren hill that rises some 700 meters over the sandy semi desert plains to the south of the holy city. During the early years of the founding of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad and his teachings of the new faith was not welcome among the pagan Arabs of Makkah. In order to survive, the Holy Prophet chose to leave the city in secret and flee towards Medina, another major city in those early days where he believed that he can bring his ideas to fruition according to the will of Allah. During his exodus from Mecca, the Prophet Muhammad and his trusted companion Al Siddiq sought refuge in a cave in the rocky heights of the Thour Mountain. Even after the victorious return of the Holy Prophet, the significance of the mountain was remembered by his followers as it was the place which was the refuge to the divine apostle of Allah himself.

The actual place in the mountain where the Holy Prophet sought refuge is known as Thour Cave. This cave is located high on the cliff face in a secluded location well hidden form the prying eyes of one’s foes, while providing a good all round view of the surroundings. Before feeling towards Medina, it is said that the Holy Prophet stayed in the Tour Cave for three days till the time which it was safe for him to undertake the journey. It is an interesting and inspiring place for a visit, as it was where the stalwart faith of one man began the journey to become the voice of many millions in a dark night so long ago.

If you’re staying at a Makkah hotel, it is quite easy to find your way to Thour Mountain and back within the day. Classy Makkah hotels, such as the Raffles Makkah Palace offers good deals for a short stay in the holy city of Makkah. Take your time to explore Thour Mountain and the surrounding countryside; every minute will be worth the discovery!
